Dear Reader,

The Hungarian Canadian Community Services has been serving Toronto’s Hungarian community since 1991 as a charitable, non-profit organization. We provide advice, counseling and interpretation services to new immigrants. Our volunteers visit ill or older clients to help them with errands and official matters. Occasionally, presentations are organized on topics of common interest. In the past, our programs for youth have included a summer Day Camp, providing a positive experience for children of families with limited means. Our newest endeavours are organizing programs for Hungarian seniors in Nursing Homes. In short, we try to redress a variety of needs within the scope of our means. If you wish to help us in our future planning and can spare the time please fill out the enclosed survey and send it back or drop it off at our office whenever you are in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, our means are not without limits. Small grants from the City of Toronto and private donations constitute our financial repertoire. This is why we appeal to your generosity. Please take under consideration this request for financial assistance for your fellow Hungarians. Income tax receipts will be issued for all donations. We thank you sincerely, HCCS Board of Directors HCCS Programs for Seniors at Rákóczi Villa I
Old age does not necessarily denote illness; rather, it is an irreversible stage of life. Reaching this stage means that we have lived through many different and interesting phases and gained a lifetime of experiences. We have made choices along the way, and how we choose to live and integrate life’s many little challenges is still up to us. In general, however, we find that being members of a senior’s community makes life run a little more smoothly.

Often, elderly people like spending their time with other seniors who have similar backgrounds and interests. Rákóczi Villa I. provides a warm environment with many social and recreational opportunities for seniors. The cozy apartments allow residents to live self-supporting, independent lives, while enjoying the option of being surrounded by Hungarian-speaking peers who share the same cultural background and customs.

The Hungarian Canadian Community Services provides different programs and services designed to assist the elderly and make life more dynamic and enjoyable. For example, we screen Hungarian movies every Monday in the residents’ library at the Villa. After the movie, residents like to discuss the film and socialize with each other.

On occasion, Hilda Moldvaj leads the residents in singing and other musical activities designed to enhance mental and physical fitness. The residents are always excited about these events and look forward to them.

Wednesdays are dedicated to bible study for those who are interested. Discussions follow the presentations given by Hajnalka Horváth-Kovács.

On Thursdays, Emöke Szíjjártó reads aloud from printed materials to those who have difficulty reading or who simply enjoy listening to a good story in the company of others. After the reading, most of the seniors stay behind to share in interesting dialogue with each other.

At the various activities mentioned above, we often provide nutritious snacks, which are welcomed and enjoyed by all.

The goal of the HCCS is to provide seniors with interesting personal and recreational experiences, as well as the opportunity to participate in their Hungarian culture and heritage.
